Weather

It's certainly no surprise that the weather in most all of hawai`i is beautiful almost all the time. Kihei is located on leeward side (away from the prevailing trade winds) of Mount Haleakala. Most of the moisture in the trades gets squeezed out over the windward side of Haleakala, so Kihei is quite dry--a little over 7" of rain per year. Days are usually sunny, with afternoon sea breezes. Nights are balmy and you'll rarely need a sweater.

Don't forget the sun block. At 21º north latitude the UV factor can be very high.

Packing

Pack light. With the exception of a few extremely fancy hotels and restaurants, Hawai`i is a very "hang loose" kind of place. Shorts, a t-shirt and rubber slippers should have you covered for most daytime situations. Casual wear will get you into almost any restaurant.

Agricultural Inspections

Hawai`i has no snakes and no rabies and we'd like to keep it that way. On the flight to the island, you'll be asked to fill out short form declaring any animals or agricultural products you've brought along. If you have any of this contraband, it'll probably be quarantined or destroyed.

At the airport, starting your trip back to the mainland, your luggage will be passed through U.S. Department of Agriculture scanners. Get your luggage scanned before going to the ticket counter. Most fruits and some flowers, unless they have an Dept. of Ag.  inspection stamp on them, can't be taken to the mainland.

Please note: If you're just going to another island in Hawai`i, you don't need to go through Ag. inspection.
